Honoring the Legacy of Eric Kimunguyi: A Champion for Sustainable Agriculture

The agricultural community in Kenya and beyond is mourning the loss of Eric Kimunguyi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Agrochemicals Association of Kenya (aak-GROW/Croplife), who passed away recently. His departure leaves a profound void in the sector, but his vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to sustainable farming practices will continue to inspire generations.

Eric was more than a leader; he was a bridge-builder. In 2023, his organization partnered with Rootooba during the GLOBALG.A.P. Tourstop, supporting the event through exhibition and generous donations of branded giveaways, including t-shirts that became a symbol of unity during field visits. His contributions went beyond sponsorship—he embodied the spirit of collaboration, ensuring that farmers, regulators, and industry players worked hand in hand toward safer and more productive agriculture.

This year, at the GLOBALG.A.P. Tourstop 2025, Eric once again demonstrated his dedication to advancing agricultural dialogue. As a panelist in a fireside chat on The Status of Banned Pesticide Molecules, he engaged in a candid discussion with Fredrick Muchiri, CEO of the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB). Eric’s insights were both pragmatic and visionary. He reminded delegates and stakeholders in general that Africa uses comparatively smaller quantities of pesticides per hectare, yet emphasized the urgent need to strengthen Integrated Pest Management (IPM) adoption. His call was clear—reduce dependency on chemicals while safeguarding yields.

Eric also championed the harmonization of regional standards within the East African Community (EAC), warning that fragmented regulations risk creating trade distortions. He urged for deeper understanding of international regulatory dynamics, positioning Africa not as a passive recipient of global policies but as an active participant shaping its agricultural future.

Beyond his professional achievements, Eric will be remembered for his humility, generosity, and ability to connect with people. His presence at industry events was not just about policy and science—it was about people, about ensuring that farmers felt supported and that the agricultural sector remained resilient in the face of global challenges.

Rootooba pays tribute to Eric Kimunguyi as a visionary leader, a trusted partner, and a friend of the farming community. His legacy is one of courage, collaboration, and commitment to sustainable agriculture. While his voice may be gone, his message endures: that Africa’s agricultural future depends on innovation, unity, and a shared responsibility to protect both people and the planet.

Rest in peace, Eric Kimunguyi. Your impact will continue to grow in the fields you nurtured and the lives you touched.
