Kamuthanga Farm in Machakos County is one of Africa’s most innovative aquaculture enterprises. The farm is best known for its Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), which allow for the production of Nile tilapia, African catfish, and ornamental fish such as goldfish and koi carp. With an annual capacity of about 100 tonnes, the farm demonstrates how technology and sustainability can go hand in hand. Beyond aquaculture, Kamuthanga Farm integrates crop farming, piggery, poultry, and rabbit rearing, creating a model of circular agriculture where waste and resources are shared across enterprises. The farm became the first in Africa to achieve EcoMark certification from the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO), a milestone that underscores its leadership in sustainable aquaculture.
